Pressure ulcer prevention and pain relief is successful when we choose a surface for the citizen's weight and carry out care plans

Choose a surface that shapes to the body, distributes pressure and provides stability to maintain mobility. Avoid shearing forces during movement and transfers. Think all the way around 24 hours a day.

It is not a question of wound stage or whether the citizen is at low, medium or high risk, but important to choose what suits the individual citizen. Whether the citizen is thin, normal weight, overweight or bariatric: Select according to the citizen’s weight. Carry out care plans for citizens, which are also called “Care bundles”.

Pressure distribution also promotes wound healing, recovery and is indispensable for pain relief in the rehabilitation process.

SAFE Med Products will follow the contours of the body when lying down and sitting down and provide effective pressure distribution and pain relief. In general, it is important that the pressure is well distributed on the mattress and seat cushion, and the pressure must be distributed over a large contact surface. A low average pressure while not having strong pressure points is important. In the case of bony protrusions, the point is to have as little difference as possible in the border areas.

Only 1 in 50 people need an air dynamic alternating pressure mattress or automatic turning system. This means that 49 people out of 50 get the best help by lying on a static pressure-distributing foam mattress that matches the person’s weight and takes care of the important mobility.

Pressure ulcers and tissue damage - Why do they occur?

Deformation of tissue is the main cause. Pressure ulcers occur due to shearing forces of the soft tissue. When tissue is stressed by sitting in a chair or lying in a bed, tissue is deformed. It is in the border areas that the damage occurs first. Deformation of tissue is a greater factor than the lack of blood supply. High load (pressure + shear) causes a lot of deformation that tissue cannot cope with, and a pressure ulcer/tissue damage will develop in a short time. After prolonged periods of light stress on tissues with less blood supply, pressure ulcers will also develop.

PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION and changing position without shear forces and friction will prevent tissue damages. PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION gives longer time between positioning intervals and is thus very important in relation to avoiding pressure sores/tissue damage. The same applies in the healing process of pressure sores/tissue damage.

A possible total pressure relief of a body part promotes a healing process, but pressure distribution with a low pressure is sufficient aid in the healing process when it is consistent.

Preventive action: If the citizen is immobile or has activity restrictions, has diabetes, poor blood circulation, reduced sense of touch, poor nutritional status, is incontinent, sweats or is undergoing treatment that creates a risk of pressure ulcers, then preventive action must be taken.

Important that positioning cushions, seat cushions and mattresses are SOUNDLESS for citizens with dementia.

Pressure distribution is pain-relieving – Why does it work?

When the foam mattress or seat cushion shape to the body and distributes pressure, there is a better balance between muscles, bones and joints.
Pressure distribution is pain-relieving for many disorders and chronic conditions because the foam shapes to the body.

Choose pressure-distributing foam surface for the weight of the citizen: mattresses, seat cushions, toilet cushions, pelvic chair cushions and shower chair cushions that shape and retain their load-bearing capacity.

Avoid the warm heel protector boot!
Use leg and heel positioning options with safe and comfortable pressure distribution and pressure relief.

Heel lifts and heel relief with lower leg support can be done both safely, easily and comfortably.

Use gutter shaped cushions for placement under the leg and heel with total relief of the heel for both very thin and bariatric citizens.

Use positioning cushions to relieve the ears, hips, under the knees and for stable side lying.
Bend the bed below the knees or place a wedge cushion under the thighs before raising the head to prevent shearing forces.

Both BETTER and CHEAPER – say many experienced therapists.
